European Action Week Against Racism

Fifty years ago, on 21 March 1960, in Sharpeville, South Africa, the police shot dead 69 protesters who participated in a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws”. The UN National Assembly proclaimed March 21st the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, calling upon the international community not only to commemorate the Sharperville tragedy, but also to take joint measures to eliminate racism and racial discrimination irrespective of where such phenomena arise.

Since 1993, the European UNITED for Intercultural Action network has been organising the European-wide Action Week Against Racism, aimed to promote the ideas of diversity, tolerance and equality. Currently, more than 100,000 people from all over Europe engage in the initiative each year. In 2015, on the occasion of actions conducted under the Communication for Integration (C4i) project, Lublin organisations and institutions have prepared special events marking the Week Against Racism. The following participants have joined in:

  1. Lublin Municipal Office
  2. Lublin Pearls Association
  3. Dla Ziemi Association
  4. T.E.A.M. Teatrikon Foundation
  5. AIESEC Lublin
  6. Hieronim Łopaciński Municipal Library in Lublin

and organised events including: “Football is for Everyone” friendly match at the Arena Lublin stadium; joint painting of a mural; Global Village; library lessons for children dedicated to the subject of tolerance.
