It’s a film about a tragic, impossible love; about people entangled in the snares of the totalitarian system, or - as other interpreters say - an universal story about the consequences of not very strong faith, incompleteness spiritual experience. In the black-and-white images by Jerzy Wójcik the authors of the black-and-white conclusions not much contained. But it is certainly one of the most outstanding Polish films and one of the most interesting portraits of women. The outstanding portrayal of Lucyna Winnicka as the possessed prioress counterpoints with the excellent supporting role by Anna Ciepielewska.
