The first ever Christmas card was designed by J. Horsley in 1843. Sir Henry Cole (1808-1882), the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, had many friends, so writing greetings letters was very time-consuming. In 1843, prior to Christmas, he came up with a great idea: he commissioned a painter friend of his to make a drawing with Christmas greetings; then he copied it at a print shop and sent it out to his friends. The drawing, which showed a family making a toast, was designed by artist John Calcott Horsley (1817-1903).
