“The Lunchbox”

“The way to a man's heart is through his stomach” is one of life’s universal truths. Saajan, a young widower, is enchanted by the mistakenly eaten lunch specially prepared by Ili for somebody else. For Ili, this coincidence gives rise to a number of changes, bringing a breath of fresh air in her monotonous life. Batra subtly follows the consecutive stages of falling in love, fusing them with humorous elements, and as a result treating the audience to a delicious meal. A seemingly simple script was translated onto the screen in a way that brought out intimacy and warmth, artfully travestying the too-often-travelled roads of romcom filmmaking and extending the formula through the introduction of the motifs of social approval and moral dilemmas.
