"Hannah Arendt"
directed by: Margarethe von Trotta
Germany/France/Luxembourg 2012 (running time: 113 min)
The plot of this biopic takes us back to the early 1960s (1960-64) and focuses on the events related to the Adolf Eichmann trial. Working as a correspondent for the New Yorker, Hannah Arendt was sent to Jerusalem to cover the trial of the Nazi criminal and the mastermind of the Final Solution of the Jewish Question. Arendt, whose work is known not only in philosophy departments worldwide, was at that time convinced by the idea (and existence) of absolute evil, which was practiced by the Nazis. However, her first-hand contact with Eichmann radically changed her rationale, leading her to reach most bitter and painfully quotidian conclusions.
Von Trotta’s take on the very demanding topic of coming to terms with Nazism is very straightforward and direct. Simultaneously, the portrait of Arendt is touching and intriguing.
