The exhibition is the result of Nelly Agassi’s reflection on the history and location of the building which houses Galeria Labirynt Plaza. The artist’s inspiration was the original designation of the area in Lipowa Street and the subsequent change of its character, but, most of all, the obliteration of memory about the history of this place. Originally, a labour camp of Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke (DAW; the German Equipment Works) was situated in this plot in 1939 by the SS where until the autumn of 1943 prisoners of Jewish origin were employed. Currently, it is a part of the city devoted to the service sector with a shopping centre. The artist analyses maps of both places (the camp and the shopping centre) also in the context of the current purpose of the building, focusing on the problem of consumerism, which according to her is associated with a feeling of emptiness and an attempt to fill the sense of loss.
The exhibition will be on display until July 20.
