Re:union - IDEA

RE:UNION

The historical perspective is only a starting point for Lublin – to revise the concept of union, both in reflecting on the current state of affairs and in designing the future.

RE:UNION becomes a tool for examining the shattered identity of a Europe in crisis, searching for an ideological antidote. RE:UNION is meant to revive hope in post-pandemic times and during the war in Ukraine.

“Free with free, equal with equal,” the basic idea of the treaty once concluded, remains relevant even today, when the process of European integration is gaining new momentum. Let us remember that in 1569, it was in Lublin that the conditions for peaceful coexistence and cooperation of many peoples and nations were created, with respect for their subjectivity and preservation of their ethnic, cultural or religious peculiarities. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was intended as a state of equal rights for Poles, Lithuanians, Byelorussians, Ukrainians, with a great role for Germans, both from royal Prussia and princely Prussia. We must also not forget the Jews, who produced a unique culture in the area.

Looking at the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from a European perspective, one can say that it was a unique coupling of many elements, a melting pot of cultures. Such was the insightful analysis of the phenomenon of the Union of Lublin by historians studying the roots of the European cultural space, including Jerzy Kloczowski.

The slogan RE:UNION encourages questions about the new community, the awareness of distinctiveness and uniqueness when acting in cooperation. It points to the invisible network of connections between Eastern European countries, the links between art, science, sports, the creative sector and business. RE:UNION will strengthen them, enabling the flow of experience, knowledge and critical reflection that will trigger synergistic actions for real, sustainable development of the city.
